In Antarctica in January 1982, the crew of the U.S. Antarctic research vessel CGC "U.S. Grant" are celebrating Christmas early due to their research being finished ahead of schedule when they receive a distress call from the British Antarctic Survey team at Rothera Research Station, who are under attack by a pack of killer whales (or "killer whales" as called in the British English version). After arriving at the station, the crew discovers that their leader, Dr. Brian Stokes, has been killed by the animals and discover that Stokes's team has suffered heavy losses. The crew of "U.S. Grant" board the station to assist in returning to McMurdo Station for help and supplies for returning to the "Ulysses" which is leaving for Wellington, New Zealand within two weeks. On January 13, 1982, "Ulysses" loses radio contact with McMurdo due to an avalanche caused by a cryogenic bulldozer being driven too fast through packed snow. An emergency team consisting of Captain Frank Tibben, First Officer Carter, Doctor Sarah Mather, and dogsledder Bryan "Dog" (John Boyd) is sent to find the missing expedition. The team soon discovers that "Ulysses" has sunk into the ice pack. After finding a distress signal from the ship's doctor that the dogs are free to roam outside their cages, she is then killed by an aggressive male dog who has sired a litter of puppies. As they seek refuge in the vessel's only lifeboat, Tibben's speculations about potential rescue are cut short when he is killed by another dog. The surviving humans and dogs escape the sinking ship in the lifeboat and make it to land. There, they split up, after finding "Bree", an injured female dog, who temporarily bonds with Bryan until she dies from her injuries. After Carter is killed by a pack of killer whales when he goes out with the only rifle to hunt penguins for food for them all, Dog decides they must head back to base camp in hopes of finding more food in storage in case no help arrives. When they reach the camp, the rescue team discovers that most of it has burned down with all their equipment destroyed in a fire with only a few cans of dog food left.
